Curriculum Pages Index

As you can appreciate this website is continuously under development... It's our aim to add pages on a regular basis in all curriculum areas: check back frequently. We hope you enjoy the articles and activities and find the links and recommended resources useful. Over the next year we will be working our way through each subject area and writing fresh, new content.

Mathematics

Be a Confident Maths Teacher at Home

by Margaret Etherton and Beverley Paine

from Learning Maths Naturally, a Practical Homeschooling Series booklet

Parents are not unusual if they feel inadequate in Maths and many may not feel equal to the challenge to teach their own children. If their "phobia" comes to the surface they may be worried that they will infect their children with similar feelings.

The first thing you can do is please don't let your children hear you say "I hated Maths", even if you did hate it!

Should your child be disadvantaged just because your teacher was just like a prison warden?

Talk about the positive aspects of maths that you use in every day life. Look for the areas of expertise you have - you may not like calculus but you are a whiz at mental arithmetic; or you can find your way home no matter where you are; or you can't find your way home but you read a street directory; you can calculate change quickly; you are able to knit a jumper or sew and make creative patterns; you can estimate weights accurately when you are buying fruit; or you can use a computer efficiently.

These are all mathematical related activities.

Look about you and see the maths that is present in every day life. Use it, talk about it, explain it, enjoy it!

We are users of maths - it is one of the most useful education tools we will learn. Celebrate your maths ability and you'll find your children will emulate your confidence and use maths naturally in their lives.

Pioneering members of the home education movement in Australia, Beverley and Robin Paine are passionate advocates of true educational choice for families. They began homeschooling their children in 1986 and three years later started the South Australian Home Based Learners network. Beverley wrote several books and booklets on home education through her self-publishing business, Always Learning Books. Beverley retired from actively supporting home education in July 2008 to allow her to spend time on her garden and writing projects. She maintains an extensive collection of websites as well as several Yahoo groups supporting families teaching their children at home. Beverley continues to support the Home Education Association of Australia as a committee member. Beverley's books will remain available through her websites. Gradually all of her books will be converted to E-books as she makes the transition to a 'paperless office'.
