Encourage Your Children to Read to Each Other© Beverley Paine, 2004 April began reading to her brothers the moment she could read. Before that she would tell them stories... Encourage your children to read to each other from an early age. Reading aloud develops fluency, improves vocabulary, and teaches children to read with articulation and expression. Suddenly all those punctuation marks begin to make sense! Older children love to show off their skills to an inexperienced audience that won't pick up on every 'error'. But sometimes younger siblings or friends can be a tough audience, especially if they already know the story well. They will often demand proper diction, a clear voice, with expression and emotion embedded into the storytelling, or they may ask pointed and pertinent questions if the material is factual. Children often feel safe reading to each other, away from adults and it's a great practice for them, with the added bonus of building self-esteem as well as reading skills. |

Pioneering members of the home education movement in Australia, Beverley and Robin Paine are passionate advocates of true educational choice for families. They began homeschooling their children in 1986 and three years later started the South Australian Home Based Learners network. Beverley wrote several books and booklets on home education through her self-publishing business, Always Learning Books. Beverley retired from actively supporting home education in July 2008 to allow her to spend time on her garden and writing projects. She maintains an extensive collection of websites as well as several Yahoo groups supporting families teaching their children at home. Beverley continues to support the Home Education Association of Australia as a committee member. Beverley's books will remain available through her websites. Gradually all of her books will be converted to E-books as she makes the transition to a 'paperless office'.
