Writing Before Reading© Beverley Paine, 2004 Long before they were readers my children were writers. April began by writing her name. Much to her kindy teacher's consternation she refused to write it forwards and wrote the whole thing, including the letters, backwards. Shortly afterward I realised she could read upside-down letters too... She was three, almost four. We abandoned our fears, implanted by worried teacher, that April was dyslexic, and encouraged her to write and read in any way she liked. At five she read picture books to her brothers, and at six read her first novel. I can't divorce the writing process from the reading process. From learning to write April understood the power behind reading. Writing allowed her to tell people things without her presence... Writing could tell people she didn't even know things, such as her name, what the girl in her painting was doing, why the dog was sad. What power for a three year old! |

Pioneering members of the home education movement in Australia, Beverley and Robin Paine are passionate advocates of true educational choice for families. They began homeschooling their children in 1986 and three years later started the South Australian Home Based Learners network. Beverley wrote several books and booklets on home education through her self-publishing business, Always Learning Books, and maintained an extensive collection of websites as well as several Yahoo groups supporting families teaching their children at home. Beverley retired from actively supporting home education in July 2008 to allow her to spend time on her garden and writing projects. She continues to support the Home Education Association of Australia as a committee member.
